COLDWATER AQUARIUM FISH

Fancy Goldfish
Goldfish come in all shapes and sizes, they have been selectively bred over hundreds of year to produce a vast selection of types collectively known as fancy or twintail goldfish. Wildwoods have been suppliers of high quality fancy goldfish for more than thirty years and we offer many different types from some of the best breeders in the Orient.

Please Email for current stock availability as our selection changes frequently. Normally we would offer for sale: Ryukins, Orandas, Moors, Butterflies, Pearlscales, Celestials, Lionheads, Bubble eyes, Ranchus and Telescopes. We would usually stock these in a variety of sizes to suit anything from the smallest tank to the largest show aquarium. Look out for our jumbo show specimens too.

Fancy goldfish can be quite challenging fish to keep but the rewards are high. Adult orandas, with their well developed ‘hoods’, or butterflies and their splendid long tails, are amongst the most attractive fishes at Wildwoods.

Ideally, goldfish should be kept in large, well filtered aquaria. Normal room temperature is sufficient although additional heating would be recommended during the winter if the tank is located in a cold position. A temperature of 17 – 20 degrees is best. The hardier varieties can be kept outdoors in a pond during the summer and will benefit from exposure to sunlight. The extra space will be appreciated too.

Correct feeding is essential for maintaining good health in fancy goldfish. Too much of the wrong kind of dried food can cause digestive problems as well as swim bladder disorders. Leading food manufacturers such as Tetra and Hikari supply a range of pelleted foods especially made for these fishes. Dried food should be supplemented on a regular basis with frozen foods like bloodworm, brine shrimp, mosquito larvae and daphnia.

Goldfish are generally, very messy fish. Good filtration and diligent aquarium maintenance is crucial. Water changes of 25% every 7 – 10 days will help keep the water quality high.

Give these fish plenty of space, and they will grow to a good size and should properly develop the characteristic variety traits which make them so appealing.

Specialist Coldwater Aquarium Fish
At Wildwoods, we pride ourselves on sourcing some of the hobby’s more unusual species of fish. The coldwater department is no exception and aquarists travel from all over the country to see these often rare and special aquarium jewels.

As usual, our stock turnover is often high and we keep too many species to list them all, so it pays to contact us frequently to check the current situation. Wildwoods experience in sourcing these ‘hard to find’ species means we can offer a far greater variety than many dealers. We have built up an extensive range of contacts for these scarce fishes and import from as far afield as China, America, Hong Kong, Germany, Japan and Czech Republic.

As always, care should be taken when selecting unusual species of fish. Often there is little written information available regarding their requirements.

Some species will grow very large, whilst others are predatory. Wildwoods Fish House staff, are experienced aquarists who will happily advise customers who are unsure about keeping these specialist fishes.
